Ashura or the tenth day of the Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar is the day followed by religious Shi’ite Muslims as they mourn the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad in the battle of Karbala around 1400 years back. Shite Muslims gather in large numbers on the day of Asura to mourn and flagellate themselves.
Being in the center of the spot where the devotees are in all fervor and energy flagellating themselves, it was a delicate but a tough subject to cover.
